The CAPHC Board of Directors is honoured to recognize Anne McGuire, former President & CEO, IWK Health Centre, Halifax, Nova Scotia, as the recipient of the CAPHC 2014 Contribution to Child Health Award. Established by the CAPHC Board of Directors in 2005, this prestigious award recognizes outstanding achievement from multiple perspectives, and was created to recognize individuals who have dedicated their careers to making a difference in the lives and well-being of children, youth and families in Canada. http://www.caphc.org/caphc-awards/

Anne is being recognized today for her long-standing commitment to excellence in quality healthcare services for all children and youth. Today, CAPHC is honoring an outstanding individual who has advocated for and led many initiatives in Primary Healthcare, Health Policy, Mental Health and Addictions, Women’s and Children’s healthcare, research and education. Anne’s career has included all aspects of health care, but her passion is most focussed on early childhood development and mental health, where she believes there is much work yet to be done. 

Anne McGuire retired on September 30, 2014 as the President & CEO of the IWK Health Centre, in Halifax Nova Scotia. The IWK Health Centre is the Maritimes’ tertiary centre for women, youth and children – an academic health sciences centre of Dalhousie University. Anne holds a diploma in Nursing from the Nightingale School in Toronto, a Bachelor of Nursing from McGill University, and a Masters of Health Administration from Dalhousie University. Anne has taken leadership roles in health care associations provincially and nationally throughout her career and served on the Canadian Association of Paediatric Healthcare Centre’s Board of Directors for many years. Anne was also a surveyor with Accreditation Canada for 10 years. Anne has mentored many emerging health leaders throughout her career and takes great pleasure in the success of those she has worked with over the years. 

Throughout a tremendous career, our honoree has received multiple awards that include:  Atlantic Canada Top 50 CEO Hall of Fame – Inducted in 2012; Chamber of Commerce Businesswoman of the Year – Atlantic Division, 2012;  Big Brothers, Big Sisters – Community Mentoring Award, 2009; Outstanding Contribution Award - School of Health Administration, Dalhousie University, 2005;  Award for Excellence and Innovation - Presented by the Bluenose Chapter, Canadian College of Health Service Executives, June 1997; and Progress Women of Excellence Award for strategic leadership in reshaping mental health service delivery.
